On most Hayward systems a generic cell costs you the warranty. On the AquaRite S3 it costs you function: the controller checks the cell and refuses one it does not recognise.

Trap one: the S3 checks the cell
Every other Hayward system in our archive treats a non-genuine cell as a warranty problem. The AquaRite S3 treats it as a compatibility problem. Hayward states the restriction on the product itself, its control board documentation names the only cell family the connector supports, and its own service troubleshooting has a message for a cell that fails the check.

Trap two: it only runs one direction
An S3 cell can be configured to work on an older AquaRite, but an older cell cannot be made to work on an S3. And the backwards path is narrower than it looks: on a pre-2009 AquaRite or an AquaRite XL, Hayward restricts it to the 40,000 gallon S3 models only. Everyone else models S3 compatibility as one yes-or-no field. It is two, and they point opposite ways.
What this means before you buy
Read the controller, not the cell. The label on the box on the wall decides which parts are available to you, and the aftermarket makers agree: four of them publish an explicit exclusion for the AquaRite S3 on their own product pages. If your controller is an S3, the cheaper cell is not an option at any price. Here is the honest math for everyone else.
