Trap two: it only runs one direction
An S3 cell can be configured to work on an older AquaRite, but an older cell cannot be made to work on an S3. And the backwards path is narrower than it looks: on a pre-2009 AquaRite or an AquaRite XL, Hayward restricts it to the 40,000 gallon S3 models only. Everyone else models S3 compatibility as one yes-or-no field. It is two, and they point opposite ways.

What replacement cell fits a Hayward AquaRite?

Will a generic cell work on my AquaRite?
On most AquaRite systems it will physically work and the consequence is a warranty one: Hayward states that using a non-genuine cell voids the warranty for that product. How do I tell whether my AquaRite is an S3?
The model designation is printed on the controller enclosure, and the S3 carries it in the name. Is the AquaRite 900 the same as a standard AquaRite?
No, and treating them as one system is the second trap on this page. They are separate controllers with separate documentation, and the cell that fits one is not automatically the cell that fits the other. The 900 has its own fitment page here for that reason.
Does Hayward say how many hours an AquaRite cell is built to last?
No. Across every Hayward document held here, manuals, sell sheets, line sheets and warranty terms, including the French-language editions, no rated cell life is published. That absence was checked for, not simply missed, and it matters because a cost-per-hour comparison against a brand that does publish one has no denominator on the Hayward side.
