The comparison runs the opposite way to its reputation
The story everyone tells is that the aftermarket warranty is the thin one. On paper the aftermarket is the side that shows its working: 3 of these makers print an explicit year-by-year proration schedule, so you can see exactly what year four is worth before you buy. No Hayward residential term sheet in the archive contains proration language at all.
That is not the same as the aftermarket warranty being better. It is shorter, it is non-transferable where the makers state a transfer rule, and a prorated year is a discount rather than a replacement. It does mean the comparison people argue about is not the comparison the documents describe.
The one place the argument ends

On every other Hayward system a non-genuine cell costs you the warranty, which is a decision
a buyer can make with open eyes. On the S3 generation Hayward states the system works only
with a genuine S3 cell, and its own service documentation describes a message for a cell that
fails that check. Hayward's own general rule is blunt about the reverse direction too: If your chlorinator does not offer the cross referenced selection, do not use the TurboCell S3.

Are aftermarket salt cells any good?
The paperwork runs the opposite way to the reputation. Several aftermarket makers publish a year-by-year warranty schedule, which is more than one of the branded manufacturers publishes for the same part. That says something about disclosure, not about plate life, and plate life is the one figure nobody here publishes at all.
Do aftermarket cells come with a warranty?
The ones tracked here do, and they put the terms in writing. What varies is whether coverage transfers, whether registration is needed and where the clock starts, which is exactly the fine print that decides a claim two years from now.
Will an aftermarket cell void my Hayward warranty?
On the equipment it is connected to, Hayward says yes: its own manual states that using a non-genuine cell voids the warranty for that product. On the AquaRite S3 the problem is not warranty at all, because the controller checks the cell and refuses one it does not recognise. Which of those applies to you depends on which controller is on your pad.
Do the aftermarket makers admit they are not the original manufacturer?
The ones here do, in their own words, and one of them states plainly in its own guide that the branded manufacturer does not support its product. It is quoted here word for word, because it is the sentence a buyer would want to have seen first.
Is a cheaper cell the same cell with a different label?
Nobody in this category publishes enough to answer that, and this site will not guess at it. What is documented is compatibility, published terms and channel conditions, and those are enough to make the decision without a claim about who manufactures what.
What is still missing here, and why it is missing
No prices, because no price capture has been taken and a made-up range would undo the only thing this site sells. No lifespan comparison, because none of these makers publishes a rated life in hours and neither does Hayward, so any hours-per-dollar figure would have an invented denominator. No verdict on which cell lasts longer, because that needs owner data we have not collected honestly yet.
