OEM or generic: what the documents say you are trading
The generic saves real money up front. What you give up is not quality in the abstract, it is two specific lines of warranty fine print and one compatibility check, and both are written down.

Everyone selling a cell has a side. What follows is what each manufacturer put in writing about the other, quoted from documents on file.
The aftermarket maker says it out loud
An aftermarket cell's own user guide states, immediately above its own warranty heading:

That is the clearest statement of the trade available anywhere, and it comes from the party with the least incentive to make it. The generic is a real product from a real manufacturer. It is simply not the OEM's problem if it fails.
The OEM says the reverse, and means it literally
Hayward's exclusion is a blanket void, not a causation test:
Use of a non-genuine Hayward replacement salt chlorination cell on any Hayward automation or
chlorination product will void the warranty for that product.
That is not damage-caused-by
language. Fitting the part is the trigger.
Pentair and CircuPool write theirs as causation instead, excluding damage due to failure to use original replacement parts. Jandy's is more generic again and never mentions cells at all. Three materially different positions, usually reported as one.
The part everyone gets backwards
The aftermarket makers apply the identical rule to their own equipment. CircuPool, APX and Pureline all exclude damage from non-genuine replacement parts in their own warranties. So this is not OEM protectionism against a scrappy aftermarket. It is what every manufacturer in the category says about parts it did not make, including the ones selling you the alternative.
Certification is not the badge argument it looks like
A certifier's listing records a specific holder, a specific model list and a specific scope.
NSF's own footnote scopes them: Electrolytic chlorinator cells are only certified for use with Hayward AquaRite, SwimPure, Swim Pure Extreme, Naturesoft and Pro Logic models as specified in manual.
Nothing has been evaluated for a non-Hayward cell in a Hayward system, because nobody
submitted that combination for evaluation.
The caveat that has to travel with that: NSF/ANSI 50 is a standard, not a certifier. UL and Intertek certify to it as well and publish separately, so absence from one database is not evidence of non-certification, and any page claiming otherwise is making a false claim. What a reader can actually check is whether their exact part number appears in a certifier's database and what the scope line beside it says.

Before the money question, one thing about the other side of it. Every aftermarket maker we hold documents for publishes its own warranty schedule, and those schedules are more explicit than the OEM ones rather than less. What each aftermarket maker actually publishes is here.
One aftermarket schedule is worth knowing about in advance, and it is quoted here rather than summarized because the oddity is in the wording itself. This is the residential schedule printed in the CircuPool GEN15 Plus replacement cell user guide, archived 2026-07-25:
Year One - No charge for parts. Year Two - Parts supplied at 50% of base price. Year Three - Parts supplied at 20% of base price.
The owner's share falls as the cell ages instead of rising, which is the reverse of every other schedule in the archive.
Caution. This wording has two readings and the document does not settle it
"Parts supplied at 50% of base price" can mean you pay half the base price for the replacement part, or that the maker covers half and bills you the remainder. Those come to the same bill. What the sentence does not settle is what "base price" is: the price you originally paid, or the part's current list price on the day you claim. On a part whose list price moves, those two readings are different amounts of money.
Both readings are printed here, not just the one we find more likely, because the document does not say and guessing on a reader's behalf is how a warranty page becomes wrong. Ask the maker which one applies before you rely on either.
Where the price comparison goes
No dollar figures appear here yet. This site publishes dated multi-channel bands, never live prices, and the first capture has not been taken. A price is the easiest thing on a page like this to get wrong and the fastest to go stale, so it waits for the same treatment as everything else.
Whichever way you go, the listing matters as much as the part. On two of these brands the channel you buy through changes the warranty before the box is even open, and on one of them an internet purchase falls outside it entirely. Two-minute check before you pay.

How much do I actually save going generic?
The up-front gap is the easy half and it is real. The half that decides whether it was a good trade is what the branded part carries that the generic does not, which on Hayward is coverage on the equipment the cell is plugged into, and on the S3 is whether the controller accepts the cell at all. This page does the arithmetic on both halves, not on the sticker alone.
Will a generic cell void my Hayward warranty?
Hayward's own warranty exclusions state that using a non-genuine replacement cell voids the warranty for that product. That trigger is blanket: it never asks whether the cell caused the failure. Pentair and CircuPool word their exclusions around damage caused by non-genuine parts, which is a different and narrower rule.
Will a generic cell even work on my system?
On most Hayward generations, yes, and the cost is the warranty. On the AquaRite S3 the answer is no: Hayward states the system works only with a genuine S3 series cell, and its service documentation describes a message for a cell that fails that check. Check which controller is on your wall before you compare any prices.
How much does a replacement salt cell cost?
No price is published on this site yet, because no price capture has been taken and a range copied from a listing this morning is stale by the afternoon. What is published is the denominator nobody else gets right: Pentair states 10,000 rated hours for the IC40, and Hayward publishes no rated life at all for the T-CELL-15.
Is the OEM cell actually better, or just branded?
Nothing in the documents settles that, and this site will not pretend otherwise. What the documents do settle is what each side promises when it fails: the term, whether it prorates, whether it transfers, and what the sales channel does to all three. That is the comparison you can actually make before you buy.
Is a certified cell safer than an uncertified one?
Certification is narrower than it looks. NSF's listing scopes Hayward cells as certified only for use with named Hayward systems, so a non-Hayward cell in a Hayward system has not been evaluated as a combination by anybody. Absence from a certification database is not evidence that a product is unsafe; it is evidence that nobody submitted that combination.
